WOW! What a great weekend. The class of '57 celebrated their 50-year reunion in conjunction with this
year's homecoming. It all started on Thursday night at the Masonic Lodge with a private dinner and
reunion. Sixty-one graduates and forty-four guests showed up and by all accounts had a great time.
The committee did a great job of putting this three-day celebration together. Lawrence Klier handled the
MC duties and Mike Phillips lit a candle for our deceased classmates and led us in prayer before the dinner.
The rest of the evening was spent taking long lazy walks down memory lane.
Friday: A large group of classmates gathered at the high school to participate in the homecoming
parade. We all piled onto two trailers furnished by the class of 1982 and rode the parade route
throwing candy to the crowd. (One or two were seen eating the candy and throwing the wrappers.)
After the parade many stayed and took the school tour. There have been quite a few changes in the
last 50 years and it was very interesting. It brought back a lot of fond memories and a few that
were not so fond. We topped Friday off with a tailgater at the west end of stadium before the game.
Once again our hosts (class of '82) came through for us - pork burgers, baked beans, tater salad,
cookies, water, sodas, coffee and hot chocolate. OUTSTANDING! We had our tummies full and were ready for some
hard-nosed NCHS football. We were not disappointed. Final score: Newton 48 - Robinson 14.
During the half we made our way out onto the field and were honored as the 50-year class. Each
was given a balloon that we released as our name was called. As the second day came to a close
we heard nothing but positive comments about the Friday festivities.
Saturday: The Alumni Banquet at the Sunrise Center was also a great success. Another great dinner,
another opportunity to talk about old times and dance music was supplied by Kenneth Bast from
Findley playing keyboards. He is very talented and the music was the final touch to a very enjoyable evening.
We had a very good turnout for all events and hope that you all enjoyed our
time together as much as we did. A committee has been selected for our next reunion in five years. If you
have any suggestions for the next reunion please contact Madonna Schackmann, Carolyn Kirts, Karen
Pitcher, Carol Schafer, Carol Purcell or Kenny Hartrich. (Good luck Kenny.)
There are some people we need to thank:
The Masonic Lodge for the use of their facility and the four chefs (including two classmates,
Wanda Portlock and Zeoy Nix) that prepared a great meal for us.
Don and Brenda Marshall for furnishing the 57 Ford convertible decorations and for coming early
to set them up and place them around the dining hall.
To the class of '82 and especially, Rhonda, Peggy & Pat, Mark & Sherry, Greg & Sheila,
Chuck & Debbie for a great parade, tailgate party and alumni banquet. We appreciate how much work
you put into these projects.
To this year's committee - Lawrence and Madonna Klier, Mike and Pauline Phillips and Connie McCall.
